About Kara

I
began freelance writing in 1997 while earning my master's
degree from Northwestern University's Medill School
of Journalism. Having left behind a career in medical
marketing/communications, my background was well suited
to writing for publications such as Hospitals & Health
Networks magazine and the Health & Fitness section
of The Dallas Morning News.
From
1998 to 2003 I edited the Dallas Medical Journal,
further increasing my background and knowledge of medical
topics. During this time I also wrote for Spirit magazine
(Southwest Airline's in-flight publication).
As
a runner and triathlete I was eager to write about my
passion for these sports and contributed to Triathlete
magazine, Sports Illustrated Women, Runner's
World, and Fit. I also began writing "Lactic
Acid," a column for the endurance-triathlon webzine
xtri.com.
In 2001 I published my first book,
Becoming an Ironman: First Encounters with the Ultimate
Endurance Event. And in 2003, just two weeks before
becoming a mother, I delivered my first children's book,
See Mom Run.
After moving to the Twin
Cities area in 2003, I began writing the multisport
and adventure racing department, "Full Speed," for Experience
Life magazine and became a regular contributor to
Women's Adventure magazine. In 2005, during my
second pregnancy, I edited a birth preparation manual
for Family Way Publications called Preparing for
Multiples. I also contribute to Minnesota Monthly and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Currently I am co-writing another
book, Hot (Sweaty) Mamas: Five Secrets to Life as
a Fit Mom. I also write a blog called Mama Sweat,
about finding fitness in the chaos of motherhood, at
http://mamasweat.blogspot.com.
Most of my current writing assignments and speaking
obligations center around making fitness a priority
after parenthood, family fitness and raising fit kids.
I'm
a member of the Loft Literary Center and the American
Society of Journalists and Authors.
